Serpent & the Swan‘s Fall/Winter 2014 collection titled Lady & Ermine was inspired by 14th Century Renaissance, in particular Leonardo Di Vinci’s artwork ‘Lady with an Ermine‘.

Following their enduring curiosity into the mystical animal kingdom and anatomy of creatures, this season design duo Hayley and Lauri Smith were fascinated with the domesticated pets that the aristocracy and royalty of the 14th Century kept.

Playing with textures and opposing fabrications, the collection features dark velvets, cracked leathers, printed long silk shirts and sheer mesh pieces. Oversized shearling jackets, embossed quilted fleece, plush faux furs and textured wool structural pieces are all finished with Serpent & the Swan’s signature bronze fastenings, this season in the form of tiny ermine skull buttons and horse head zipper pulls. Creating two new prints for the collection, Hayley & Lauri have translated ermine fur onto silk as well as a tonal deconstructed ermine skeleton printed onto unisex shirts and loose tees.

Staying true to the beautiful androgynous aesthetic of the brand, Lady & Ermine is a subtle yet striking collection with an underlying dark opulence.
