Throughout his latest collection, appropriately called “Tantrum,”Charles Jeffrey Loverboy explored the maddening sensation of residual pent-up rage and the compulsion to scream. His Fall/Winter 2018 line-up evoked the power of pain, the hard-edged glamour of hedonism, and the continual power of performance. Equal parts performance art and runway, Charles Jeffrey’s shows are always the most thrilling to experience during fashion week; this time, it was borderline terrifying. With performers shouting at full force and convulsing across the runway, often staring right into the eyes of those on the front row, the garments this season – including his expanded women’s offerings – were surprisingly rarely overshadowed by the commotion. Through the noise and excitement, you see how evolved his designs have become over the years, how he fused military regalia with mid-century influences; the silhouettes were loud but intrinsically uncompromising, with tartans, carefully torn outerwear and reimagined M65s. This season was Charles Jeffrey Loverboy at his best and most poetic – a hopeful sign that this rising talent continues to ascend.
