MORDECAI unveils Collection #1: “Flight Techniques”
by Adriano Batista
MORDECAI made its debut at Men’s Fashion Week on January 12th, 2024, as part of the CNMI official calendar. The brand’s first collection, titled “Flight Techniques”, is a tribute to the concept of lightness and its implications for fashion.
The creative director of MORDECAI, Ludovico Bruno, said that he wanted to explore the essence of lightness in clothing, and how it can challenge the conventional boundaries of style and function. He said that he was inspired by the idea of traveling light, and how it can lead to a more essential and refined wardrobe.
“Flight Techniques” is a collection that emphasizes a fundamental and defined style, inspired by menswear staples and martial arts attire. The garments are designed to be light and precise, with a distinct silhouette-driven approach. The shapes are loose yet controlled, featuring round and substantial shoulders and pants with deep folds opening below the waist and tapering at the ankle.
The collection also showcases a neutral color palette, with new tones such as cognac, burnt brown, and dark grey melange. The fabrics and materials used are super light and high-quality, such as matte nylon, fustian, mohair-like wool, hand-operated cashmere pashmina, and cupro silk. Sheepskin and leather are also prominent, in natural dark brown hues, while exclusive fabrics, such as raw wool jacquard, display intricate patterns on a loom.
Knitwear is another key element of the collection, as MORDECAI reinvents the traditional sweatshirt with a revolutionary knitting technique, creating a knitted cashmere grommet ensemble that offers a luxurious and comfortable alternative to active leisurewear. Baby alpaca and super kid mohair add a soft and light fuzzy texture to basics in merino, cashmere, and cotton.
