Carhartt WIP’s Active Jacket Turns 50: Anniversary Edition
by Adriano Batista

The Carhartt WIP Active Jacket is turning fifty. To mark the occasion, the brand has created four special-edition designs. Each one pays homage to the original, a piece that has become a symbol of identity and adaptation.
The Active Jacket was first launched in the United States to appeal to a more casual audience. It was inspired by a classic hooded sweatshirt but was redesigned for durability, with a reinforced exterior and an insulated lining. It first appeared in denim with a red flannel lining, and later in the iconic duck canvas.

In 1997, Carhartt WIP introduced its own version, known as the OG Active Jacket. It kept the original’s functional details (the bomber shape, triple-stitched seams) but with a looser, more relaxed fit.

This year’s anniversary editions come in four limited styles: colorblocked canvas, camouflage, denim, and leather. They keep the classic silhouette but are now fully reversible and feature a special commemorative tag. The canvas versions honor the first jacket, while the denim edition has a stone-bleached finish and a quilted satin lining. The leather version offers a more sophisticated take.

The Anniversary Edition launches on October 30th. Alongside it, Carhartt WIP has collaborated with ILL-STUDIO on a book titled Sedimental Works, which explores these fifty years through the lens of this single, enduring jacket.
