PANGEA was a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. That is, a very long time ago. Everything was ne and there was no need to get on a plane or boat, or apply for a visa, in order to visit its vast surface. It was like this until the Earth suddenly started shaking: volcanoes began erupting, the ground dividing and oceans began taking its place.
None of this is new. The Earth, for as long as it has existed, has been in a state of constant change, whether it was uniting large masses of surface or dividing into natural borders. There have been at least four supercontinents in existence until today. Why did we chose Pangea as the namesake for this issue? Well, because it’s a pretty name. In this very moment, F/W 2016, we find ourselves in a time where not only are both natural and man made borders numerous, we’re living in a technological revolution that does away with these barriers (except in North Korea).
Getting on a plane means that we can be almost anywhere in the world in less than 24 hours. With an Iphone 7 or a computer from the cybercafé down the road, we can be anywhere in the world in less than 24 seconds. Take this magazine for example: for this issue we’ve interviewed Liam Hodges from London, which will be read by someone in Tokyo. How cool is that?
The world is a marvelous, diverse place and borders are meant to be crossed. A border should not be a wall, but a door. Like entering a library and getting soaked in knowledge.
Everyone should cross a border at least once in their life, so that they can return as a richer person: someone who’s learnt, someone who’s taught.
We hope that in the future, within the next few million years, when the continents go back to uniting and natural borders disappear, man won’t be erecting walls.
Welcome to Pangea.
