The Louis Vuitton Foundation in New York is presenting a focused exhibition of two paintings by Gustave Caillebotte. The show brings together “Young Man at His Window” from the J. Paul Getty Museum and “Boating Party” from the Musée d’Orsay. This pairing creates a direct conversation between two of the artist’s most significant works.

Caillebotte was a painter deeply engaged with modern life in the late 19th century. He used his art to document the changes in Parisian society, often drawing models from his own circle of brothers, friends, and fellow sailors. This provided a distinct view of masculinity at the time.

The two paintings at the center of the show represent two different sides of his focus. “Young Man at His Window” shows the restrained, private moment of a figure in an interior. “Boating Party” captures the energy of a collective sporting event. Together, they explore the tension between solitude and social life.

Caillebotte’s technique also felt modern. His use of bold, close-up framing pulls the viewer into the scene, creating a strong sense of immersion. He offers a personal perspective on a society that was rapidly changing.

This New York presentation follows a major international exhibition dedicated to the artist. It highlights a central part of his work: his invention of a new imagery for modern masculinity. The event is part of a continuing effort to restore Caillebotte’s important place in the history of art.
