Idea Books Latest Release STEP IN TIME: STING’S RAVE LEGACY
by Anna Barr
“Our aim is not to present a definitive account of a scene, but create a personal document, a snapshot of one man’s endeavors. We hope to capture the vibrancy, excitement and sheer energy of the worlds Sting helped to create.” – Rollo + Brav, STEP IN TIME Editors
As an American growing up, there was always something mystical about the British Jungle raves, a scene I missed out on, but heard about for years from English friends that recounted their nights out. It was underground, found on flyers, word of mouth, not social media, and pirate rave radio. Today, Jungle, Garage, and Grime are deservedly acknowledged as pivotal in the evolution of modern UK culture, STEP IN TIME: STING’S RAVE LEGACY hears his narrative in a raw and compelling book. Sting, also known as Kenny King, is the originator of the landmark hardcore/jungle parties Life Utopia and Telepathy along with Déjà Vu FM radio station making up the cornerstone in the Garage and Grime scenes.
“I don’t know about you guys but I was going through a phase of spiritual awareness and discovery back then, and there was a certain kind of aura, of mysticism associated with rave and it just fit, you know. Telepathy – it was like everybody in the same place, on the same vibe, all tuned into the same thing. And I know it sounds cheesy but it was like we were all communicating telepathically man. It felt relevant, because we were coming out of a very funny time, culturally and socially, you had Thatcherism and the miners’ strike and…” Sting, Chapter 2: TELEPATHY, LIFE UTOPIA, THE EARLY YEARS
Compiled by Andrew Bravin and Rollo Jackson this book offers an unprecedented look into the world of 90s rave culture through the lens of one of its key figures. The book is made up of unseen VHS footage from iconic warehouse raves and club nights, rare flyers from Sting’s personal collection, quotes, and tributes from industry luminaries while capturing the vibrancy and energy of the early Hardcore/Jungle scene.
