Flamboyant: Joana Vasconcelos Brings Contemporary Art to Liria Palace
by Adriano Batista
On February 13, 2025, the Casa de Alba Foundation opened a new chapter in the history of the Liria Palace in Madrid with the exhibition Flamboyant by Joana Vasconcelos. This project marks a significant moment for the palace, as it is the first time the Portuguese artist has brought her work to an inhabited palace, blending her contemporary art with the historical and artistic richness of the space.

Joana Vasconcelos is known for her large-scale sculptures and installations, and this exhibition is no exception. She has chosen over forty of her works to display throughout the palace, including areas like the chapel, the music room, and the gardens, which were previously closed to the public. Her art interacts with the palace’s existing collection, which includes masterpieces by artists like Velázquez, Goya, and Titian. This creates a unique dialogue between the old and the new, highlighting the palace’s ability to adapt to modern contexts while preserving its historical essence.

Vasconcelos emphasizes that the Liria Palace is not just a museum of the past but a living space. Her work reflects this idea, engaging with the personality of the Duke of Alba, who still resides there. The exhibition is part of a broader contemporary art program launched by the Casa de Alba Foundation to celebrate its 50th anniversary. It is organized in collaboration with the Atelier Joana Vasconcelos and supported by Madrid City Council, the Community of Madrid, Mastercard, and Maison Dior, which has a long-standing relationship with the artist.

The exhibition runs until July 31, 2025, offering visitors a chance to experience this unique fusion of past and present.
