Join us for a conversation with David Mendez Alonso, as he gives us a glimpse into his creative process and what we can expect to see from his brand in the future, and enjoy the backstage photos captured by Selene Aliayi:

Can you tell us about the collection you presented at 080 Barcelona Fashion?

Is it called COFRE DEL TESORO. Consists of 26 body-neutral looks.

What was the inspiration, and how did you go about translating that inspiration into your designs?

It’s inspired by a child and a grandfather who find points in common and dress the same. That child who dresses like a grandfather or that grandfather who dresses as a child. I am interested in the arbitrariness of a child when dressing that we have emphasized with unmatched styling.

What’s your favorite piece from this collection?

Cow leather jackets and handmade crochet items.

What materials have you used for the collection?

I have a huge list of materials: Organic cotton yarns for all the sweaters, Cow leather materials, recycled polyester, Nylon, Feathers, Denim…

What materials and fabrics do you enjoy working with the most, and why?

I would choose knitwear which allows me to achieve textures and mix different techniques. I like how my illustrations are translated into knitwear.

How do you balance creativity and wearability when designing menswear?

I try to design based on a sales history and try to innovate and not fall into repetition. Creativity is the part that will make your garments interesting and have a special presence that can generate a speech and a conversation about the one who wears them. Wearability is essential in clothing design because the sole purpose of clothing is to wear it. Create unique clothing that can replicate that feeling on anyone’s body.

How do you stay up-to-date on the latest trends and styles, while still maintaining your own unique point of view?

Reading amazing magazines as FY! and always being open to hearing and listening to what everybody has to say.

How would you say your brand stands out from other menswear brands?

Trying to stay true to my point of view without replicating myself.

What advice would you give to aspiring menswear designers who are just starting out in the industry?

There is no better person than you to be yourself. Don’t try to be someone else.

What can we expect to see from your brand in the future? Are there any new collections or projects that you’re currently working on?

I would like to continue finding and investigating adult childhood and the preppy and kidcore style. I hope that more catwalks, collaborations, and new points of sale will come.
