Black Orchid Reserve: Tom Ford’s New Fragrance
by Adriano Batista
The search for something truly rare is at the heart of Tom Ford’s latest fragrance. Black Orchid Reserve brings together the original Black Orchid with the essence of a midnight-blooming Ghost Orchid. It’s a powerful combination that captures the intense nature of both flowers.

As Master Perfumer Yann Vasnier explains, the original Black Orchid became legendary by creating a new kind of floral scent, unexpected and unmatched. This new version celebrates that icon while introducing a glamorous partner: the Ghost Orchid accord. To create it, the perfumers explored deeper shades of black and doubled the signature accord of the original, amplifying its rich and elegant character.
Black Orchid has always defied easy categorization. Its essence was captured by analyzing the air around the orchid as it bloomed. Since its debut in 2006, it has become a powerful, inimitable legend, evoking a world entirely its own.

The idea behind Black Orchid Reserve started with the attraction of opposites: finding a rare pairing that could bring a new duality to the scent. The Ghost Orchid, which grows in dark, hidden spaces with flowers that seem to float in the air, was chosen as its dazzling counterpart. Its essence was captured in the same way, from the air as its petals opened.
To support this deeper, darker chypre floral dimension, the signature Black Orchid accord is intensified. Ylang-ylang adds brightness, while Timut pepper brings a sparkling effervescence. In the background, toasted black tonka bean and an earthy black truffle accord add depth. Patchouli and amber notes blend to create a rich, woody warmth, opening a new chapter in the Black Orchid story.
