A photography exhibition in Paris this November will engage a sense beyond sight. The show, titled “Joie et refuge,” presents work from fourteen Czech artists. It is part of the PhotoSaintGermain project and will be held at the Czech Centre.

The Pigmentarium brand has joined this event to add another layer to the experience. Their task is to complement the visual art with scent, giving the project a new dimension. A warm, gourmand fragrance will separate the exhibition halls from the cool Paris streets outside.

The creative team approached scent as an artistic element. They worked with sculptor Martin Žák to create a unique object for the entrance hall: a scented sculpture. The piece is a classical female torso, the kind you might see in the nearby Louvre, but also a candle.

The candle is infused with Pigmentarium’s fragrance, Erotikon. The scent of chocolate, pink pepper, amber, and sandalwood is meant to evoke the feeling of an evening artistic gathering. It will fill the space from hidden devices and from the burning sculpture itself.

Three identical torsos will be made. Each will burn slowly throughout the three weeks of the exhibition. The fragrance itself will also be available for purchase for a limited time. In this concept, the act of seeing is deepened by the subtle power of smell.
