Rei Kawakubo Curates: Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY
by Adriano Batista
Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY has been handpicked by Rei Kawakubo for an exclusive range for the renewal opening of Trading Museum CdG at the end of October 2023 and the launch of Dover Street Market Paris in April 2024.
The Dover Street Market Paris (DSMP) will host these unique creations within a dedicated area known as “The RK space.” This space is a curated selection by Rei Kawakubo herself, showcasing designers alongside her two iconic collections, Comme des Garçons and CDG Homme Plus.
The range is a celebration of uniqueness, featuring one-of-a-kind items produced in limited quantities. Among the standout pieces is the “Navy holes suit,” crafted from the finest British wool and accentuated with tailoring canvas to create a striking effect when holes are cut out. This suit is a nod to the brand’s AW18 show “Tantrum,” replicating its opening catwalk look.
Equally impressive is the “Tartan holes suit,” constructed from Italian cotton in an “X-Ray Tartan” colorway. The name reflects the transformation of traditional Scottish tartan into a vibrant, mutated version, unique to LOVERBOY. This suit is further enhanced with appliqué dot patches and frayed edges, adding texture and depth to the design.
The collection also introduces a line of jewelry that captures the essence of LOVERBOY’s aesthetic. Classic “Loverboy creatures” are re-envisioned as dog tag necklaces and intricate wire brooches adorning miniature Scottish kilt pins. Each piece is a singular creation, embodying the various personas that define Charles Jeffrey’s vision for this capsule.
This collaboration marks a full-circle moment for Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY and Dover Street Market / CDG, reflecting a partnership that began in FW16. As one of the first stockists to support the brand, their relationship has flourished globally, and this latest endeavor is a homage to the most cherished items, viewed through a fresh perspective.
