“For a lot of people, us included, the pandemic and subsequent lockdown were a moment of awakening to what is really important. Being away from our loved ones, or unable to be with them physically really pushed this idea of family. Over the course of March and April 2020, we spent a lot of time watching family movies of Reid’s grandfather, father, and his childhood.
Reflecting on the world situation at that time, we felt connected to the innocence and simplicity that was expressed in them. The parallels between the very old, a recurrent inspiration in our work, and the very young that we saw in them became the starting point to our spring-summer 2021 collection.
It was also very personal for Reid, an opportunity to reconnect with his grandfather, and namesake of our brand, in a deep way. To be able to pause and have meaningful conversations instead of being pulled in different directions by the distractions of the everyday was beautiful. To be able to hear honest advice in simple terms was quite profound and very basic at the same time. This is what we wanted to share with you in our video.
One piece of advice that he gave is “love your neighbors.” The last few months have shown how our behavior can have such a powerful and direct impact on both those around us and those indirectly around us as well.
For better and for worse, the culture that we have inherited from our forefathers is part of who we are. It is not for us to judge, but to look back, learn from their mistakes. We have to come to terms with the past, educating ourselves, and making decisions for the greater good. We have a responsibility to our neighbors.
So more than a season inspired by youth or a man reflecting on his life, the spring- summer 2021 collection is a nod to the circle of Life. To the lessons passed from grandfather to grandson, from generation to generation. To the reflections, the memories and regrets, the mistakes and good deeds; and to this position of learning that we need to put ourselves in to grow.”
