Kenzo steps up to support the French Judo team for their Paris competitions this summer! This partnership aligns with LVMH’s (Kenzo’s parent company) big push to back major sporting events.

For these high-stakes matches, Kenzo’s Artistic Director Nigo cooked up a special uniform inspired by Judo’s Japanese roots. The team will be rocking Kimono-inspired suits, similar to what they showed off at Kenzo’s Fall/Winter 2023 show.

The Kimono has a long history, dating back to 8th century Japan. Over time, it’s gone through some changes. Back in the Edo period, everyone wore Kimonos, regardless of age or social status. Even today, it’s a big deal in Japan, worn for special occasions.

Judo itself has also seen the Kimono adapt. They made it shorter and looser for better movement, and switched to thicker fabrics for those all-important grips. The Kimono reflects Judo’s core values – discipline, respect, and dedication – which totally jive with Kenzo’s vibe. Nigo’s designs are heavily influenced by Japan’s traditional style, and the Kimono is a perfect example. Reimagined here as a sleek, special-occasion outfit, it continues Nigo’s signature East-meets-West approach that keeps Kenzo fresh.

These French athletes will proudly wear the KENZO Kimono suit on various official occasions this summer.
