Changing Minds with Changing Tides: The Gnarly Queens Queer Surf Fest
by Adriano Batista
On October 11, the sands of Praia Nova in Costa da Caparica will host something new: Portugal’s first queer surf festival. Called Gnarly Queens Queer Surf Fest, the event is a community-built celebration of surfing, art, music, and queer joy.

Held at Burger Queens, a cultural anchor for Caparica’s LGBTQ+ scene, the festival is a direct and joyful challenge to the macho, exclusionary norms that have long defined surf culture. Its motto, “Changing Minds with Changing Tides,” captures its spirit: a belief that the ocean belongs to everyone.
The event is built around inclusion. The surf jam is open to queer and gender-diverse surfers of all skill levels, prioritizing fun and participation over performance. Beyond the water, the festival includes a queer market, film screenings, talks with activists, food pop-ups, and live music, all fostering open dialogue about making surfing a more welcoming space.
Behind the festival is a team of local advocates and creatives, including fashion designer and surfer João Magalhães, Rove brand founder Guilherme Amaral, Burger Queens co-founder Ana Fernandes, and Nuno Brito of NZS Surf & Skate School. Together, they are creating a day where sport, art, and activism meet.
The Gnarly Queens Queer Surf Fest is a story of visibility and resistance, a grassroots effort to reshape who feels they belong in the water. SAVE THE DATE and RSVP HERE!
