Airei has unveiled its latest collection for the Fall/Winter 2024 season. Titled “Bright Horses”, it was inspired by the song of the same name by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, from their 2019 album Ghosteen.
The song, which Cave described as “a defiant song of hope and a longing for something else”, is a reflection on the themes of love and loss, grief and hope, and the search for divinity among the ordinary. The collection, which was presented in a digital format due to the ongoing pandemic, captures these emotions through the use of contrasting colors, textures, and fabrics.
The collection features a black and natural color palette, with occasional flashes of bright red and blue. The focus is on the texture and the polarity of the colors, creating a visual tension between light and darkness. Natural threads burst from the garments, symbolizing purity and the struggle to break free from the shadows. The silhouettes are oversized and asymmetrical, creating a sense of movement and fluidity.
The collection also showcases Airei’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility, as the label has partnered with Norlha, a sustainable luxury brand based in the Tibetan Plateau. Norlha, which means “wealth of the gods” in Tibetan, works with local nomads to produce high-quality yak wool products, while empowering them with skills and income. Airei has incorporated Norlha’s yak wool into some of the pieces, adding a touch of warmth and softness to the collection.
In addition, Airei has introduced limited garments made with deadstock and damaged fabrics from various LVMH houses. These fabrics, which would otherwise be discarded, are given a new life and a new meaning by Airei, who transforms them into unique and artistic creations.
Another highlight of the collection is the use of khadi, the hand-woven fabric from India, which Airei has been experimenting with for several seasons. This time, the label has explored a chaotic striped pattern, creating a contrast between the simplicity and the complexity of the fabric. Khadi, which is known for its durability and breathability, also represents Airei’s respect for the tradition and the craftsmanship of the Indian weavers.
