The exhibition Thierry Mugler | Azzedine Alaïa: Two Decades of Artistic Connivances, curated by Olivier Saillard, explores the creative friendship and mutual influence of two iconic designers. Running from March 3 to June 29, 2025, in Paris, it highlights how Mugler and Alaïa shaped the glamour and innovation of 1980s and 1990s fashion.
Azzedine Alaïa, a self-taught master couturier, became known for his precision and craftsmanship, earning comparisons to legends like Balenciaga and Vionnet. He met Thierry Mugler in 1979, sparking a deep friendship and collaboration. Mugler invited Alaïa to design tuxedos for his Fall-Winter 1979-80 collection, publicly crediting him and encouraging his rise as a designer. Mugler even helped organize Alaïa’s first New York show in 1982, solidifying their bond.
While Mugler was known for theatrical shows, Alaïa focused on intimacy and perfection. Yet, their collections often mirrored each other, blending their unique visions. Mugler credited Alaïa for making his designs more wearable, while Alaïa’s work gained boldness from Mugler’s influence.
Their friendship extended beyond fashion. Mugler previewed his collections for Alaïa and shared his muses, Zuleika and Mirabelle, with him. This mutual respect defined their relationship, lasting until their deaths just six years apart.
The exhibition features over 40 Mugler pieces preserved by Alaïa, alongside his own archives, showcasing their shared vision.
