La FAB by agnès b presents a retrospective exhibition of Harmony Korine
by Ivica Mamedy
This November, agnès b. presents a new exhibition dedicated to the work of filmmaker, writer and visual artist Harmony Korine in their cultural space La Fab in Paris. Agnès owns the largest collection in the world of the American artist since 1997. This retrospection show, the first one hosted by La Fab will celebrate the artistic complicity between Harmony Korine and agnès b. that has lasted for over 25 years.

Over three decades, Harmony Korine’s practice has been defined by his innovative approach and edgy exploration of the boundaries between painting, cinema, and other forms of expression. Often inspired by contemporary culture and elements of daily life, Korine creates work that challenges aesthetic and social norms. His creations, whether films or paintings, blend elements of fiction and reality, building an atmosphere that is both playful and unsettling. By playing with themes of the absurd and the ephemeral, he invites viewers to question their perceptions of the world and engage in deep reflections on identity, society, and art itself.
Born in 1973 in Bolinas, California, Harmony Korine is mostly known for his films, notably Gummo and Spring Breakers starring Selena Gomez as well as Vanessa Hudgens. He is a space of 1990s underground culture and American independent movies. As a multidisciplinary artist-both filmmaker and writer as well as visual artist-his work resists categorization. Improvisation, humor, repetition, nostalgia, and poetry unite the disparate elements of his production, driven by tireless experimentation and a process of trial and error, culminating in what Korine calls ‘mistake art’.
agnès b. and Harmony Korine’s meeting feels organic and sincere when it took place in 1999 at La Monstra de Venise through his movie Julien Donkey Boy. This event marked the beginning of a close relationship and numerous artistic collaborations that are still on today. Earlier this year, agnès b showcased three new pieces acquired in 2023 in the exhibition Contemporary Figurative Painting in the agnès b. collection. These works are part of a new series of paintings with acid tones taken from his film Aggro Dr1ft, released that same year.
This retrospective exhibition of Harmony Korine will be the first solo show in agnès b.’s collection hosted at La Fab, the cultural space powered by Agnès herself. It’s all about a celebration of the artistic complicity between them that has lasted for over 25 years.
