Marni and Dingyun Zhang co-design a limited outerwear series of Fall/Winter 2023
by Gabriel Córdoba Acosta

Following its debut at Paris Fashion Week and conquering the French capital with the spectacular Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Marni and its creative director Francesco Risso are back to introduce a series of limited-edition down-filled outerwear designed in collaboration with Dingyun Zhang. The launch is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to creative exchange.

Seen on the runway in Tokyo at the brand’s runway show in February this year, the line of functional daywear pieces investigates the superhuman appearance and its connection to the individual, featuring organic silhouettes that both protect and elevate the body through exaggerated proportions. Each shape carefully amplifies the key elements presented on the catwalk, incorporating a vocabulary based on textures, primary colours, polka dots, and window patterns, creating a visual symphony, defined as both poetic and daring at the same time.

At the heart of this collaboration is a shared vision that transcends convention; all styles are masterfully designed, featuring oversized shapes that align with Ding’s unique methodology, and crafted with Marni’s distinctive mohair. Thanks to this, all items exude luxury and comfort, as well as unparalleled warmth during the cold season, thanks to the soft hand-knitted outer layer and the insulating properties of down.
Marni’s signature is present throughout the capsule, but so is Ding’s, and it is evident in the intricate craftsmanship, with each design skilfully sculpted to evoke a sense of movement and dynamism, capturing the essence of contemporary fashion, not to mention the designer’s radical approach to utilitarian design, patternmaking, and three-dimensionality.

The limited edition series of the two is accompanied by a series of direct and intimate portraits by acclaimed American visual artist Jim Goldberg, as part of the Fall/Winter 2023 Vol.2 digital campaign that runs across Marni channels worldwide over the course of the coming season.
