A. Sauvage Spring/Summer 2014 Lookbook
by Adriano Batista

In 1851 Adrien Sauvage’s great-grandfather travelled from western Nigeria to the British isles. He was raised and educated in scotland by an irish priest, trained in the law and graduated from a British university. Sauvage’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection for house A. Sauvage reflects this meeting of cultures, introducing themes of duality and conflict.
The collection incorporates British heritage cloths, as well as scenes from the African savannah, while continuing to blur the line between day and eveningwear. Integrating with the designer’s central themes, the work of artist Nelson Crespo (Ggermany, 1975) is a key influence this season. Crespo’s ‘eden’ series combines the real with the surreal by manipulating found images of animals, plants and landscapes. The cut-and-paste style of this work adds an anarchic streak to Sauvage’s measured pallet and refined tailoring.
Alongside this, Sauvage presents his first tartan for A. Sauvage. designed in-house, the print playfully combines Sauvage’s signature kente and his ancestral connection with scotland. This is complemented by a variety of textured cloths including basket-weave cotton and contemporary micro-pin cord, as well as velvet, silk and linen. These are brought together in a colour scheme that draws upon the scottish landscape.
Highlights this season include silk-panelled jersey and printed linen tailoring. The collection also includes a full range of leather accessories, including digitally-printed rucksacks, tote bags and card holders. This season Sauvage will also debut his first collection of eyewear for A. Sauvage. Hand-crafted in italy using traditional methods, the six styles take their inspiration from classic 1950s designs. The frames will be available as both sunglasses and optical for men and women.
