Steve Smyth is no stranger to transformation. The Australian-born, Barcelona-based singer-songwriter has made a name for himself with raw, soulful vocals and evocative storytelling. His latest release, Matches, explores themes of resilience, loss, and renewal, capturing the fleeting moments that define us. This release marks the second chapter of a four-part EP series, paired with his previously released EP Blood. Together, they form a meditation on the cycles of life, navigating its double-edged nature with honesty and courage.
We sat down with Steve to talk about Matches, the interplay between music and craftsmanship, and what life looks like when you’re living and creating on your own terms.
Let’s start with the obvious—what’s the story behind Matches?
“Think fleeting moments, raw energy, and the kind of transformation that burns bright and fast.”
This EP is part of a four-part series. Is Matches the wild child, the thinker, or something else entirely?
“Definitely the wild child—it’s all about igniting something bold.”
Your voice is raw, soulful, and unapologetically you. Did you always sound this good, or did it take some work?
“Let’s just say it took some screaming into the void to find it.”
Barcelona has been your home for a while now. How has the city changed your music—or you?
“It’s taught me to lean into chaos and make it sing.”
Myth Studio is all about crafting bespoke pieces. What’s harder: carving wood or writing a song?
“Carving wood is tough, but songs fight back—they don’t always want to be found.”
Your live performances have this untamed energy. How do you keep it so raw and real every time?
“By leaving room for the unexpected—it’s never the same twice.”
If Matches were a movie, what would the tagline be?
“‘Strike fast, burn bright, and leave no regrets.’”
The EP features tracks like “N.Y.E.” and “Rock A Bye Baby.” Which song hit hardest for you when writing it?
“‘Rock A Bye Baby’—it’s the most vulnerable I’ve been in a while.”
You’ve got Matches on one side of the vinyl and Blood on the other. Which side of the coin do you live on more—fire or blood?
“Depends on the day. Sometimes I’m burning, sometimes I’m bleeding.”
What’s next: more music, more Myth Studio magic, or something completely unexpected?
“Why not all three? I like to keep people guessing.”
