The Redefined Masculinity of Christiaan de Vries
by Christopher Riedl

There is nothing more breathtaking than a young, up & coming designer, who is able to make you stop and stare. Nowadays, it takes some balls and a fresh breeze of creativity to really blow people’s minds away. Especially in fashion. And honestly, it takes some skills to fucking blow us away.
When we came across Christiaan de Vries, a student of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) in The Netherlands, it felt like a fashionable tornado. Well, there has to be a reason why he got selected for the “Honors Student Program” as one of the twelve candidates. He might have the ability to change menswear.
The 22-year old dude with a hair-do that is as remarkable and magnificent as his collection, gave us some insights behind his vision for “Redefined Masculinity”.
“Redefined Masculinity is a junction between times. Formerly, men used to dress up and show off their wealth. Jewelry, heels, stockings – the more the better. Men were as attired as women. But nowadays all this is considered to be feminine. Men have to be serious and tough. Men are men, no matter what.”
So what he tries to do is actually breaking boundaries while playing with conventions. Playful black & golden, embroidered leggings mixed with voluminous trousers and jackets, strong color choices which dominated menswear and a modern influence shown by the use of zipper and pockets. Just think about it for a second: it makes total sense. Don‘t we always want to hold on to the ,good old times‘, while we desire to be different than we use to be? With that, we want to create someone, we would like to be, right? And now, we can.
