Mura Masa’s real name is Alex Crossan. Only just 20 years old, he has already received plaudits and press reviews in The Guardian and Rolling Stone, can be repeatedly heard on BBC Radio 1 and has drawn comparisons with Disclosure, AlunaGeorge, Cashmere Cat and James Blake. According to Crossan, a Gorillaz video encouraged him to learn how to play the guitar, but he also readily admits that some of his musical taste was inspired by his father’s love of Joni Mitchell. Ten million Youtube views and 200 thousand Soundcloud followers are testament to the extent of the impact this young British producer has had since his debut just one year ago.

Despite his huge number of followers and the inevitable comparisons and influences, the genius of this young producer (who hails from the small island of Guernsey and who took his pseudonym from a 16th century Japanese swordsman) becomes clear after just a few seconds of listening to any of his tracks. The future remains to be seen, but the here and now is definitely his.
