Maison Margiela‘s 2024 Artisanal Film Premiere, Nighthawk, explores memory, illusion, and the enduring power of haute couture. Directed by Sasha Kasiuha, the film is based on an original story by John Galliano and features a star-studded cast including Kim Kardashian, Gwendoline Christie, and Monica Bellucci.
Nighthawk delves into the themes of reality versus illusion, central to Galliano’s practice at Maison Margiela. The film blurs the lines between fiction and reality, intertwining the show’s original cinematic precursor with behind-the-scenes footage. Through a silent film lens, previously unreleased moving imagery from the show is re-contextualized, offering audiences a fresh perspective. Narrated in part by Galliano, the film reflects on the inspirations, storytelling, and experimental dressmaking that shaped the 2024 Artisanal universe.
Nighthawk also introduces Count and Hen, the protagonistic muses from the 2022 Artisanal Collection, Cinema Inferno. Through parallel universes created by four-dimensional storytelling, the characters appear on screen and in real life, walking through the hallways of Cinema Le Balzac.
Played by Lulu Tenney and Leon Dame, the muses embody the illusion versus reality theme. Frederic Bittner, another muse, appears in a POV sequence and physically in person, further blurring the lines between fiction and reality.
