GmbH Fall/Winter 2025
by Adriano Batista
GmbH’s Fall/Winter 2025 collection, presented during Berlin Fashion Week, is a response to the serious and often unsettling times we live in. In a world that feels increasingly unstable, the question arises: how can fashion, often seen as frivolous, hold meaning? How can creativity thrive under such conditions? This season, GmbH chose to look inward for answers, turning away from external inspiration and instead revisiting their own past work. They listened to music from previous shows and revisited favorite looks and collections, not out of nostalgia, but to find comfort and clarity in a time of uncertainty.
The collection is rooted in introspection and a desire to reconnect with their own identity. By focusing on their own codes, silhouettes, and heritage, GmbH sought to drown out the noise of outside influences and opinions. In doing so, they rediscovered pieces that had never been shown in a physical show or fully seen before. This process became a way to center themselves, creating with intention and care.
The collection also draws from the poetry of Norwegian modernist poet Gunvor Hofmo, whose work reflects themes of grief, loss, and existential despair. Her poem From Another Reality, which lends its name to the collection, explores the idea of parallel worlds—how we see the same things but perceive them differently. This sense of duality resonates throughout the designs, which balance mourning with grace, dignity, and elegance. Tailoring and craftsmanship take center stage, inspired by the idea of dressing up and presenting oneself with pride, even in the face of societal disregard. The influence of Benjamin’s father, who rarely leaves the house without a suit, underscores the importance of self-worth and the power of personal presentation.
Craftsmanship is a key theme, emphasizing the human touch in creating clothing. The act of cutting patterns and shaping fabrics is both comforting and grounding, a reminder of the humanity behind the work. The show itself was staged in a set of draped muslin, evoking the couture salons of the past. This humble material, used to create the show’s setting, will be repurposed in the atelier for toiles, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and thoughtful design.
