Fashion as a Weapon: Trashy Clothing x Barragán’s “Arsenal of Democracy”
by Adriano Batista
Trashy Clothing and Barragán have joined forces to deliver a provocative winter collection titled “Arsenal of Democracy.” This collaboration is a platform for subversive commentary, blending style with sociopolitical critique.
Shot in Jordan by Trashy Clothing’s creative directors and featuring close friends of the brand, the campaign draws inspiration from American wartime propaganda. By reinterpreting these iconic visuals, the collection challenges the notion of cultural imperialism, sparking a conversation around psychological operations (psyops) and the inherent power structures within the fashion industry.
The collection boasts six distinct pieces designed by Omar Braika, Shukri Lawrence, and Victor Barragán, including two wrap skirts, a dress, a wrap top, and two T-shirts. Each garment seamlessly merges the brands’ signature styles with layered social commentary. By referencing the pervasive influence of media and propaganda, the designs reflect Trashy Clothing’s Palestinian heritage and Barragán’s Mexican roots, allowing both designers to explore and confront imperialism from their unique perspectives.
“We first got the idea for this collaboration after seeing a tweet dissecting our respective approaches to American imperialism,” said Trashy Clothing’s designers. “With the announcement, our community immediately responded with ‘Well, of course!’ This collection is something people anticipated because our brands share a vision of using fashion as a form of resistance.”
The campaign is further amplified by exclusive tracks produced by Adam Rajab, underscoring the collection’s satirical tone and reinforcing its strong political messaging. These tracks aim to create an immersive experience, drawing viewers deeper into the chaotic world that Trashy Clothing and Barragán have crafted.
