Eurovision 2024: Olly Alexander will represent The UK
by Ivica Mamedy
Years and Years lead singer and actor Olly Alexander was announced this Saturday via BBC Channel that he was the one representing the UK for the 2024 Eurovision contest edition. The most viewed European entertainment show will take place on May 11 in Sweden and we can already expect a surprising show. For the previous edition, The UK was represented by English singer Mae Muller and finished 25 with only 24 points. This year, it’s official Alexander will make us dance, he announced in a press statement.
It’s been a decade already that Olly Alexander is a major pop artist in the UK with his band Years and Years. With successful singles such as “King” and “If You’re Over Me”, they collaborated with Kylie Minogue, Elton John, and Belgium electronic producer The Magician. Since 2020, Years and Years became Alexander’s solo project and it seems that his participation will confirm the official launch of his career under his real name.
Olly Alexander has always been part of the queer pop culture in the UK and has been acting in some independent movies before earning mainstream success with Russell T Davies’s TV Show “It’s A Sin”. This British drama miniseries set in London between 1981 and 1991 depicts the lives of a group of gay men and their friends during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the United Kingdom. It was the most nominated show at the 2022 British Academy Television Awards, receiving eleven nominations, including Best Mini-Series.
If the song is not out yet, we already know that Alexander was in the studio with PC Music producer Danny L Harle (Dua Lipa, Caroline Polachek) and cooked an electronic song that will make us dance. The UK is doing its best to have a better score than last year by bringing their most popular queer icon and it might be a good deal.
