When Carne Bollente, the Parisian brand known for its “sex-positive” spirit, is quieter than usual, it’s because it’s up to something. Indeed, this is what has happened, as this week its Fall/Winter 23 collection was unveiled.
“History of sex”, the name given to the proposal in question, is related to the visionary portrait that the team that makes up the company has of an alternative history or, in other words, a fantasy world that departs from reality and allows for the exploration of possible future paths. All of this came from the fusion of all the parts that inspired the creation of the garments, such as Adam and Eve, the history of ancient Greece, and the Japanese erotic art of Shunga, themes that were taken and reimagined and then captured more positively.
In the world created and proposed by CB, women are stronger than men and queer individuals possess the absolute power to feel liberated and free. This is represented in the garments in the form of illustrations that fit very well with the chosen colour palette and with the style of the clothes, some of which are typical of the 90s and 00s. The pieces of this period correspond to the part General Mood, where a caricatured atmosphere is created, characterised by grunge elements and striking colours.
Following this we find Prehistory, a period that also inspires the creation of the items. In this process of inspiration and development, the predominant themes and the incorporation of various related techniques, such as cave paintings, dinosaurs, archaeological archives, and scenes of orgies around the fire, among others, have a lot to do with this process of inspiration and development.
The ancient age was also explored, in particular, the realms of ancient Egypt and Greek antiquity, leading to hieroglyphic frescoes and engravings inspired by Japanese art. Artist Anastasia Bay, a former student of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, has also contributed her Antique Al frescoes to this section.
As for the Medieval and Contemporary ages, in their respective order, the former focuses on the broad medieval period and the traditional paintings of this era, which are captured in the advertising T-shirts and allover motifs inspired by the traditional lacework of the time; and the latter corresponds to the present day. Here, modern advertising slogans and typography are mixed with grunge and optimistic illustrations.
Rounding off this offer are two collaborations. One with Anastasia Bay, the artist mentioned above, and the other with Viron, a Parisian brand of sustainable, vegan, and PETA-certified footwear. Together they have designed a range of shoes and clothing using environmentally friendly materials, such as bio-based fabrics made from apples and corn, as well as synthetic materials recycled from old PET bottles.
