Canadian artist Kris Knight presents his new solo show in Paris
by Felipe Castro

Canadian artist Kris Knight returns to Galerie Alain Gutharc with his latest solo show When The Sun Hits, presenting from October 12 to November 16, 2024. Being his third collaboration with the gallery, Knight presents intimate portraits that explore moments of beauty and desire that go with queerness in his subjects, friends, and close acquaintances. With a palette inspired by historical references, Kight balances the past with his portrayals of contemporary romance.

When The Sun Hits is the second part of a series Knight began during the pandemic, diving into Victorian ideas of wellness. Shifting from European gardens in his earlier works, this new series moves to the shore, drawing on the 19th-century “sea cure”, a belief in the healing powers of the sun, the air, and the sea. Knight’s characters escape the stress of modern life, finding peace by the water. However, underneath the calmness of his scenes, there’s a touch of unease in his new work.
