Ashton Michael Fall/Winter 2015
by Adriano Batista

Ashton Michael unveiled its Fall/Winter 2015 lookbook, featuring Jimmy Q and Torian John photographed by Ricky Tompkins. Designer Ashton Hirota went on an athletic kick for his unisex streetwear line, citing inspiration from an imaginary scenario in which “Rocky Balboa and Sporty Spice had a transgender love child fascinated by TRON.“ The collection is meant to mix and match between gender roles creating a balance of masculine , arrogance, and angels all while making an effortless statement. Hirota wanted use detailing typically found in boxing sparing gear, the graphic lines of TRON, the comfort level found in active wear with the boldness he’s known for in his leather work.
As with previous collections, he offered oversize hoodies, high-waist HotPants, baggy knee-length shorts and stovepipe pants. He added Neoprene to his foundation of fabrics, which also included leather, denim and silk. Not a fan of prints, he gave an extra dimension to his black, white, red and gray color palette by using trapunto stitching, colorblocking and seams featuring zippers or contrasting strips. He also advocated layering clothes like armor, as in a men’s look that piled a bomber jacket over a button-up shirt over a kilt over pants. Considering how edgy his fans are, it served Hirota well to continue stepping out of his comfort zone by offering new silhouettes like peak-lapel blazers.
