A Cinematic Autobiography in Stills: The Photographic Journey of Karim Aïnouz
by Adriano Batista

Karim Aïnouz is not only a celebrated filmmaker, but also a passionate photographer. The director, who was born in Fortaleza in 1966 and now lives and works in Berlin, reveals his personal and artistic journey through a series of images in his latest project, “A Cinematic Autobiography in Stills.”
The project consists of six booklets, each dedicated to one of his films, that showcase the photographs he took during the creative process. These images are more than just references or inspirations for his cinematic works. They are also expressions of his emotions, memories, and vision. They capture the people, places, and moments that shaped his stories, from friends and strangers, to landscapes and settings, to details and textures.
Aïnouz’s films have been acclaimed worldwide, winning awards and recognition at major festivals such as Berlin and Cannes. His diverse and powerful oeuvre includes both fiction and documentary, such as Firebrand (2023), Mariner of the Mountains (2023), Futuro Beach (2014), and Madame Satã (2002).
With “A Cinematic Autobiography in Stills,” Aïnouz invites the audience to explore his photographic work, which reflects and complements his cinema. The project is a unique opportunity to witness the fusion of life and art in his remarkable career.
