Rick Owens has created a scented candle named L’Apparition. The project began as an item for the gift shop of his retrospective at the Palais Galliera museum in Paris.

The candle’s inspiration is deeply literary and artistic. Owens cites Gustave Moreau’s painting “L’Apparition,” which depicts the story of Salome. In the painting, Salome holds a lotus flower. Owens connects this image to themes of what he calls “unrequited, delusional love and morbidly triumphant vengeance.” He suggests lighting the candle while reading Oscar Wilde’s version of the same story.

The fragrance itself reflects this dark, sacred atmosphere. Its key notes include lotus, labdanum, myrrh, frankincense, and ambergris. The candle is vegetable-based, vegan, and cruelty-free, made with ethically sourced oils.

It is housed in a durable black glass vessel, handmade and hand-poured in France. The packaging is made from recycled paper. Owens notes that once the candle is finished, the vessel is designed to be cleaned and reused, suggesting it could hold a single flower stem.
