Danny Singh moves through music the way most people move through moods, fluid, raw, and unfiltered. From breaking a tooth mid-set at AfroPunk’s Battle of the Bands to blending Spider-Man and Mad Max into his Ozone Park mini-movie, his world is equal parts chaos and melody. We caught up with him to talk unlikely inspirations, augmented sound experiments, and why a ginger beer & whiskey prayer ritual might be the most punk thing in R&B.

Where’s the most unlikely place you’ve pulled inspiration for a beat or hook?

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Friends, women, everyday life.

What tuned-up church instrument (piano, bass, sax) did you squeak first, and which still trips you up?

The sax and the bass are highkey my favorite.

RAAA won AfroPunk’s “Battle of Bands?, ever regret not keeping the band alive or reuniting?

Even though it was a time to be alive, everybody needed to learn how to fly on their own. Shoutout to 417NY, Ceddyjay, Johnny Based, David Lee, Richard Laurent, and Tiffany Wentz🖤

What’s the most punk-rock moment in your R&B-style life?

During battle of the bands, I broke a tooth on stage, and I lost my first nose piercing in a mosh pit because it got caught in someones fishnet jersey.

Which authors inspired your Ozone Park mini-movie?

Spider-Man. Itachi. But also, Mad Max. During the pandemic, it literally felt like the end of the world to me, so I wanted to make something with the same intensity. I could’ve gone harder in my opinion.

“…I lost my first nose piercing in a mosh pit because it got caught in someones fishnet jersey.”

Tell me more about your augmented-sound experiments, where you at currently and what you’re hoping to achieve?

I don’t really have a goal in mind. I’m just having fun in the studio with my talented friends and family. And what you hear is probably my best experiments that made it out the vault.

“Always Be” is for your mother, how her musical taste shaped your sound?

She’s always playing Sade, Brian McKnight, Marvin Gaye, Israel Houghton, and Whitney Houston around the house. She loves those “in-your-feels” sounds. So naturally I grew up loving sweet melodies and great storytelling in music. I guess life added the distortion to my sound.

If someone made a literal Punk n B comic, what would the superhero version of you look like?

White vest, braids or twist, pair it with some calm baggy sweats and some boots but when it’s time for action, the hair spikes up and I’ll probably have no visible pupils, and you can see the chi floating around me.

Biggest oddball ritual before shows?

Pray to God for a great night for my fans and for my squad. And a cup of ginger bear & whiskey on some communion type beat.
