In an age of digital noise, there’s something powerful about work made by hand. Artist Sal Salandra understands this. His upcoming exhibition, “Theater of Delight,” opens September 18th at Camera Doppia in Milan, and it brings together his intricate, hand-hooked textile works.

Salandra uses needlepoint in a way that feels both traditional and completely fresh. He transforms this classic craft into a vehicle for storytelling, blending humor, social commentary, and personal narrative. His themes are big (identity, sexuality, spirituality, community) but his approach is grounded and full of wit.

Drawing from mythology, pop culture, and his own experience, Salandra creates vivid compositions that feel both intimate and universal. There is reverence in his work, but also playfulness. He invites viewers into a world that is unapologetically honest.

As the gallery notes, Salandra reclaims a domestic craft often overlooked in fine art. In doing so, he opens a dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression. The tactile, human quality of his work offers a thoughtful counterpoint to today’s fast-paced visual culture.

This exhibition is Salandra’s first solo presentation in Milan. It’s a chance for Italian audiences to engage with an artist who finds depth in detail and truth in thread.
