UBI SUNT’s STUDY OF LIGHT

As we slowly leave the swinging menswear season behind, a lot of things became clear.
One of these was that many designers chose to offer a glimmer of sartorial hope, amidst these darker times. Positive colorings, rich textures, expressive contrast and morphed shapes, were the order of the day. Room was also given to smaller houses to venture out into abandoned warehouses, basements and even railway stations to present their takes on how men should be dressed for winter. Fashion may be many things, but it never seizes to reinvent itself. As we carefully nursed our impressions of the offering for next winter, how about we trickle back and look at the present day. Time has come for spring/summer, if we take trust the windows of our local retailers. So what better way to kick these lighter days off, by presenting some fresh takes from the Nordic hemisphere.

One brand that finely stood out amidst the fashion violence, were the quiet crafters of UBI SUNT, who silently have kept working on their edits for our masculine wardrobes. Based in Stockholm, partners in crime, Aidin Sanati and Moa Wickman, have worked in graphic and collection design for many years, working with a noticeable palette of understatement and reflection. No stranger to these pages, their brainchild, UBI SUNT, now in its 4th year running, has been the result of this calm approach to fashion. Aidin and Moa like to slow things down, pairing innovative tech fabrics from Japan, with lush Italian sourced wool, breezy linen and reworked soft cotton jersey. Each garment is a polite study of form and function, reduced to their true essence. Nothing more, nothing less. This felt refreshing in these times over over-design and consumption.

Their latest offering for SS16 is founded on subtle textures, the study of light and the wonders of tactile contrast. The colours are muted, thus directing all focus to the playful detailing and austere tailoring. Shot by Nils Odier and featuring Lucas Satherley, the campaign plays with fluid shapes and movement, without overstepping the mark, or missing the point. UBI SUNT simply wishes to provide well-made understated wardrobe staples, that retain their functionality over time. Clear. And all that other noise….ignore it.
