MEI KAWA Spring/Summer 2014 collection is again a playful yet conscious fusion of artistic and non- artistic impressions, visions and predictions of all times through all ages. This time the designer Emese Kasza focuses mainly on the blossoming still somewhat decadent era of the early 20th century.
On one hand she gains inspiration from the factory workers’ clothing traditions where functionality, comfort and the use of long-lasting, hard-wear quality used to carry key importance. On the other hand sophistication, and a highly experimental attitude beside modernist tendencies characterizing this period of time put a great impact on creating the COLLISION. Influence of various art forms and pieces such as Eric Satie’s music, August Sander’s stills or Nicolas Alan Cope’s photography lay hidden in the details.
Geometric forms, contrasted aspects, slight collision of colors, shapes, and garments beyond functionality and the very sense of minimalism drew the line of the final cut. Contrast and the concept of collision have been in focus throughout the making of spring-summer 2014 collection. Color blocking is one aspect that goes along every tiny piece of the collection. Meeting saturated colors with pastels, opposing fabrics – denim and cotton canvas mostly – to accessories in color and style create a unique still well balanced outlook.
Orthodox men’s wear fuses with work smock that recalls the industrial ages, minimal attitude covers delicate, richly sewn details giving peculiar harmony to the whole. The tendency of reinterpreting collars and pockets, as it is a custom by now at MEI KAWA is again an example for such counterbalancing and counterpointing attitude. Raincoat inspired tailoring method used for designing jackets and shirts adds a special atmosphere to each item.
