I started preparing for the season quite early, popping into my local thrift store for holiday decorations and then having many guests over for homemade treats and hot wine, but in the midst of everything, I somehow forgot to get all of my presents, and meanwhile, I had family and friends asking me what I wanted. I put together this last-minute holiday gift guide built around the things I actually love to give (and receive).

Every year, one of my quiet December rituals is reading the list of things Nicky Haslam finds common, usually as a laugh, but now it’s time I actually get around to ordering one of his infamous tea towels. This year, I’m also making room for gifts that give back, like supporting your local ACT UP. Meanwhil,e Cher’s memoir, Part One, is perfect winter reading before Part Two lands in November 2026. I want the hardcover because I know I’m going to be passing it around to friends. I remain convinced that museum passes make truly great gifts, especially for family members and kids (just make sure to get a duo pass then so they can go along with a parent or cool uncle). The Jardin des Plantes in Paris is firmly on my own wish list. Add to that a MUBI subscription, especially while it’s streaming my Christmas classic, The City of Lost Children by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Finally, never overlook library and museum gift shops, they’re goldmines for books, magnets, mugs and small home décor that feel personal without trying too hard.
