Tokyo James brings “Chaos” to the runway… Both figuratively and literally.
by Ryan Cassel
The moment the first model stepped on the runway, you could feel the surge of energy. The tasteful experimentation of the whole collection leaves no reason to look away. From exaggerated ruffles to the unique shaping and beautiful draping of leather, even the models walked as though they loved what they had on. Truly showing the work Tokyo James put into this collection and how much care went into every detail.
The vision was bold, and he saw it through. The pieces tell a story of bringing African-American heritage to luxury wear, an idea that reflects the brand and James’s identity. James explained that as the world moves on and people face different traumas amid “chaos,” he believes, “The world is in turmoil. You need some joy.” The music was powerful, and the looks were very well thought out, really bringing his visions to life and expressing his creativity. Finding beauty in disruption, colors contrasted, tailoring went hand in hand with over-exaggerated details; details were clashing in the best way possible.
Tokyo James partnered with Nahous on this project to champion African creativity on a global platform. Five specific looks were curated and revealed on the runway specifically for Nahous. This collaboration not only reinforced Tokyo James’s goal of bridging African heritage with international luxury but it also pushed the importance of organizations like Nahous in shaping the history of fashion.
Iniye Tokyo James was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Not only did he study mathematics at Queen Mary University of London, but he was a stylist, creative director, and editor at the same time. In 2015, James took the risk and started his own brand, he wanted to give perspective on both of his identities and really emphasise Nigerian Design, pushing diversity in the industry. In doing so, he also focused on showing that Nigerian production can be just as high quality as the best in the game. Even with these strong core values, his platform goes even deeper. From redefining masculinity to proving luxury doesn’t have to be held down to the same few places, his work is always exciting and boundary pushing.
