Germany’s fashion, art, and design scene came together for a vernissage hosted by JIL SANDER earlier this week at OHG Hamburg. The occasion was a music collaboration with Bochum Welt, a multidisciplinary sound artist and composer whose work combines ambient minimalism and experimental electronic music, as well as the unveiling of new Creative Director Simone Bellotti‘s first project. JIL SANDER backed the production of a seven-track EP and the Hamburg-shot music video for the song “Wanderlust”.
With so much disarray in the world, many of us have been wondering about the future of fashion, which is why I find it interesting that Bellotti is beginning a dialogue at the house using emotionally charged visual and aural means, along with the captivating EP. Music can precisely and piercingly channel and evoke emotions and moods. In addition to being indescribable and abstract, Wanderlust is a visual tapestry where sounds enhance moving visuals, and a sense of narrative coexists with abstraction. Filmed in Hamburg, the video tells the story of wanderlust while navigating between contrasts. A lyrical flow set to the melodic electronica of Bochum Welt is released by contrasts: stillness meeting with chaos, day blending into night, nature colliding with urban sprawl, raw, unfiltered moments featuring real people from Hamburg’s hidden corners alternating with cinematic scenes and mundane moments.
Fashion in general is very much an empty vessel, a product that leaves us to instill our own interpretation, to place our own meaning. Through music for his debut JIL SANDER project, Simone Bellotti looks to investigate a medium that evokes and conveys feelings, which looks to be essential to defining the JIL SANDER landscape.
Vinyls are available at select JIL SANDER boutiques, JilSander.com, and across Kudos Distribution worldwide later in August.
