Sibling Fall/Winter 2016
by Claudia Rose Walder

The first menswear show since the passing of SIBLING‘s co-creative director Joe Bates, was a triumphant one. An upbeat 80’s mix played throughout and although Bowie’s Under Pressure might have suggested the difficulties of this particular season for the lasting designer duo, their boxing themed show proved that there is plenty of fight left in them.
Celebrating the poptastic hedonism of the 1980’s, SIBLING iconised the look and life of Jean-Michel Basquiat, while paying homage to the fierceness of Grace Jones and the vision of Jean-Paul Goude. Using a royal colour palette of blood red, Prussian blue and acid yellow, each robe, belt and boxing glove looked fit for a King.
Graphic print Fair Isle knits zipped loosely exposing the chest and leopard print boxers gave the models the sexual bravado we know and love. Silk pyjama suit jackets and slouchy chunky wool gowns complete with the Basquiat crown, reflected the relaxed confidence and personal style of the artist whose famous self portrait ordained the show invite.
Despite the obvious opulence, sporty silhouettes were still at the heart of the collection as logo sports socks, face protectors and huge knitted punching bags accessorised the models intermittently. Beauty and brawn is the signature combination for SIBLING’s models, that this season were detailed with metallic stripes across the nose, dabbed onto the eye or flicked through the hair.
The tight knit SIBLING family has always extended to the show models who are often used in consecutive seasons, such as George Admiraal at Models 1 and Daniel Roberts at Nevs. However, this season the concept of family spread even further by incorporating the up-and-coming male model brothers, Taylor and Koen Prince-Fraser, the first of whom opened the show.
