Rojuu is an early bird. Born and raised in Barcelona, the 18-year-old artist started from a very young age with a Youtube channel, where he commented urban music and gained some fame and recognition and on the verge of boredom, deleted all that and began making music. He was 14, and since then has published 5 albums and 13 singles once ‘Hazlo otra vez’, the first of them all, was released in 2017. Defining his music as Shadowpop, Rojuu’s lyrics speak about the teenage sadness, the anger, the scary vision of the adult world, an ode to everything that is Emo and follows the river of melancholia. Also drawing, he has created some of the covers for the albums and singles and has a very strong influence on anime and videogames, such as ‘Evangelion’ and ‘Death note’. Coming from an artistic background from both his parents, Rojuu says that he will try whatever comes to him and then retire. This 2021, the mixtape ‘Roku Roku’ is out and an album will come, still in a moment where he plans to come in and out of the adult world until he is mature enough to accept reality.

I always rather musicians to define their own style or genre so as not to label anything. How would you describe your music style?
I like to call it Shadowpop, I too much like darkness to be full pop. My music is dark but also relatable; the limbo seems such a comfortable place if you add a nice beat to it.
You talk about discovering the depth and darkness of the adult world whilst being a teenager. The fantasy of what is ideal and the world’s acceptance. How do you understand all this?
The adult world never disappears, you are the one who adds to it, everything is working and you enter the game just like that, one day all of a sudden. I don’t care about the adult world, I hate adults and I hate the world, I like to come in and out until I am mature enough to accept reality.

You just released a new musical project, starting up with a single. What is the concept behind it? Is there a common link?
It will all end with an album, the one I have put more work into until today, the first one I am not recording in my room, the first one to come out of the bubble, it has turned really beautiful, and especially very solid.
How would you say your music has evolved from your last project to this one?
It has evolved in quality, a perfect album for the winter…

How is your creative process?
For my music, I simply listen to the song and I start writing, it’s almost a robotic mechanism. Once I have the vocals it is time to add a million details. As for drawing, I just open the pineal gland.
You have been making music for several years now. What was the motivation to start it? How do you remember that experience?
Boredom, it all feels very foggy now, as I did it without thinking, just for the sake of it. My only intention with music is to be a pioneer of some genre in my country, whether I create it or I adhere myself to something not very explored, as I like the birth of things, the genesis. But one must not think about this, it will come as it has to. In some years I will look back and see if I achieved what I wanted.

You are seated playing to your favourite videogame and the perfect music starts playing. Which song is it and who plays it?
If it’s a song from a videogame then obviously Gustavo Santaolalla, with his BSO of ‘The last of us’.
What are your main references?
Yung Lean, Space Ghost Purpp, Young Thug, Eminem, The Cure, Cecilio G and my dog.

If you could write a manga on yourself and the things that inspire you, what would it be about? And how would the cover look like?
It would be about a flower that fades, and the cover would be white.
You have stated that fashion is like an armour to you. On that, let’s say you create your own avatar or a character of yourself on a videogame or an anime. What are you wearing?
I am having my hair long and exposed, a black raincoat, a French sword from middle age and some NFL flip-flops.

Internet has had an obvious influence on you, growing up with that window to so many universes. What is your relationship with it?
Hate, I hate the internet, I hate people who live on the internet. The internet has destroyed a part of me, I don’t like people’s opinions, I don’t like to know what everyone thinks. If I could make the Internet die today, I would. I would only save online games.

And lastly, what other projects do you have coming?
There is an album coming for 2021, another one with Steve Lean for 2022, ‘Children of God 2’ for 2022, some other thing I might think about, and then I retire.
