The Phantom of the Opera has chosen his designer. Nicola Formichetti has been appointed Director of Masks for Masquerade, the new immersive Phantom experience coming to New York.

Formichetti will design all masks worn by the cast, including new interpretations of the Phantom’s iconic face-coverings. He’s also creating two exclusive designs for audience members, who are encouraged to arrive in black-tie glamour (with jewelry designer Chris Habana collaborating on the pieces). The announcement came via Formichetti’s social media, where he shared a cryptic note from the Phantom himself alongside a teaser of one sleek, fashion-forward mask.

From opera house rooftops to underground lairs, Masquerade promises to pull guests deeper into the Phantom’s world than ever before. The show’s centerpiece chandelier, dripping with 30,000 Preciosa crystals, will light up the night alongside Taittinger champagne and M•A•C makeup magic.

Based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original musical, Masquerade blurs the line between spectator and spectacle. And with Formichetti shaping its visual mystery, the Phantom’s legend just got a new face.
