Matières Fécales’ Debut Collection “THE OTHER”
by Anna Barr
“This collection is about being fearless in your identity. It’s about walking into a room with your head held high, even if nobody wants you there.” – Matières Fécales’
The creative duo that is Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran, hailing from Montreal, are the couple behind Matières Fécales, the most anticipated debut of Paris Fashion Week. With a front row made up of Chappell Roan, Michèle Lamy, Rick Owens, Juergen Teller, Daphné Guinness, and Christian Louboutin among others, you would think they were the “designer’s designer”, but with more than 700,000 Instagram followers, their community is as eclectic as heiresses to small town bored teens making stuff in their parents’ basement.

With so many cries for original creativity, the setting at Hôtel Le Marois was in stark contrast to what fans expected. However, among the opulent rooms, fairy and gore worlds crossed, reminding us to be afraid of nothing. Conventional hoodies, t-shirts, cropped bombers, and jeans were presented alongside mutant tailoring with a play in cuts and proportions, offering a collection full of breadth and depth without abandoning the space they have created for extreme individuality. Most of all, they proved their craftsmanship while deifying the codes of couture and pushing for the theme of self-confidence to an electrified audience, some probably still at home in their parent’s basement. I know because it is still my preferred creative space, and now I have the confidence to write it.
