Martin Margiela Auction: The Early Years, 1988-94
by Adriano Batista
A unique opportunity to own pieces from Martin Margiela‘s early collections will be available at a special auction hosted by Kerry Taylor Auctions and Maurice Auction in Paris on January 27th, 2025. Over 270 lots from the designer’s influential work between 1988 and 1994 will be up for bid.

The collection, belonging to the Picozzi sisters, is a testament to their mother Graziella Picozzi’s keen eye for talent. Graziella recognized Margiela’s innovative approach to fashion and supported him in his early career. The sisters have carefully preserved these pieces, many of which remain in their original packaging and have never been worn.

The auction will feature iconic pieces from seminal collections such as Spring/Summer 1990, a collection that redefined fashion with its distinctive style. The collection’s unique features, including oversized vests, distinctive suit silhouettes, and innovative fabric treatments, will be on offer. Other highlights include curtain skirt ensembles, Caban jackets, and the enigmatic priest’s cassocks.
In addition to the fashion pieces, the auction will also include important documents and ephemera, such as original paper patterns and hand-drawn sketches. These items provide a fascinating insight into Margiela’s creative process and the evolution of his signature style.

The auction and a related exhibition will be held in a disused building in Paris, creating a unique and immersive experience. This event is a must-attend for fashion enthusiasts and collectors alike, offering a chance to own a piece of fashion history.
