K-Gold Temporary Gallery Celebrates a Decade with Subversive “On an Island” Exhibition
by Adriano Batista
K-Gold Temporary Gallery on Lesbos is shaking things up for its 10th anniversary with a wild new show called “On an Island.” Curated by Nicolas Vamvouklis, the exhibit features the work of artist Kostis Stafylakis.

Stafylakis, known for his post-internet aesthetic, utilizes digital imagery to create installations, sculptures, videos, and performances. His work transcends the digital, taking on new forms and meanings within the immersive exhibition environment. A central theme explored is the blurring of lines between the digital and physical worlds. Stafylakis’s characters, existing in this in-between space, challenge us to reconsider reality.
The exhibition centers around the persona of GZPRM GOPNIK, a satirical figure derived from the online presence of Russia’s gopnik subculture. Through playful imagery – think Adidas-clad figures dancing to techno or posing with oversized fish – Stafylakis creates a quirky, bear-den-like atmosphere. With a touch of humor, he critiques Western perceptions of post-Soviet Russia, prompting viewers to grapple with political themes and contrasting viewpoints.
“On an Island” extends beyond the gallery walls. On August 3rd and 4th, the exhibition spills over into “Undefined Shapes II,” a celebration of electronic music featuring international DJs and producers. Held in a specially designed space in Skala Kalloni, the event promises screenings, discussions, and an immersive techno and ambient experience.
Accompanying the exhibition is a bilingual (Greek and English) monograph designed by Marlon Tate.
