Henk Schiffmacher, the book.
by Adriano Batista

This is the first extensive overview of Schiffmacher’s work as a photographer. Featuring a wide selection of photographs taken between 1970 and 1985 in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Mumbai, Manila, San Francisco and Kuala Lumpur. An eclectic collection of analogue shots on society, portraying a rich array of individuals showing off their best (and worst) features in front of the camera.
A unique insight into the magical world of youngsters, bikers, tattoo fetishists, legendary rock-stars, skinheads, Yakuza and many more. The wild mix of cultures, nationalities, habits and excesses against a backdrop of vintage cityscapes and timeless sceneries makes you travel back in time. A brilliant display of Schiffmacher’s view on the world, four decades ago: pure, direct and unprecedented.

Henk Schiffmacher is a Dutch tattoo artist and cultural connoisseur known for his extraordinary joie de vivre and out-of-the-ordinary tattoo styles. Henk is a true artist and always on the lookout for new add-ons to his oeuvre.
Energetic and observational photography is what marks this publication. Exactly what Henk’s daughter Texas thought when she found the old 35mm negatives in a dusty drawer, knowing these had to be exposed for the world to see.
