FXLK PLAY: Mythmaking, Devotion, And Mischief At Tom Of Finland Foundation
by Adriano Batista
For over forty years, TOM House (the historic Echo Park home of Tom of Finland Foundation) has been a creative hub, a sanctuary, and a space where LGBTQ+ artists have shaped their own myths. Now, for the first time, the work of more than 60 artists who have lived and created there will come together in FXLK PLAY: Mythmaking, Devotion, and Mischief, an exhibition opening September 12, 2025, at Long Hall in West Hollywood’s Plummer Park. Curated by Jamison Edgar, it transforms the gallery into an immersive, salon-style experience, echoing the densely packed walls of TOM House itself. It’s an invitation into a world where Queer desire, history, and fantasy collide.

Edgar frames Tom of Finland not just as an artist but as a modern folk hero, a figure whose legacy keeps evolving through the work of others. “At TOM House, the artists-in-residence don’t simply reflect Tom’s life, they continually remake it,” Edgar says. The exhibition is divided into four sections, each exploring different facets of Queer creativity. House of Gods dives into ToFF’s archives, featuring Tom’s work alongside thousands of pieces by other LGBTQ+ artists. Pleasure Park examines how desire reshapes physical space, drawing inspiration from TOM House’s gardens and intimate moments. Skeletons in the Closet confronts taboo, kink, race, and gender, with recorded reflections from past residents adding depth to the conversation. Finally, DOM TOM pays tribute to Tom’s influence.

Edward Cella, ToFF’s CEO, sees this as a pivotal moment to honor the artists who have passed through TOM House. The exhibition is about proving the foundation’s ongoing relevance. With free public programs and partnerships across West Hollywood, FXLK PLAY reinforces ToFF’s commitment to being a space for all LGBTQ+ voices. The list of participating artists speaks to the program’s reach, featuring names like Pol Anglada, whose collaborations span fashion and music, and Stuart Sandford, a multidisciplinary artist with work in major collections. Some arrive at TOM House already established; others find new inspiration there. But all contribute to the living mythology of Tom of Finland.
