Fresh Off The Boat: Embracing Cultural Fusion with Sagaboi’s SS24 Collection
by Adriano Batista
Geoff Cooper draws inspiration from the movement of people and their encounters with new cultures for Sagaboi‘s SS24 collection. Titled “Fresh Off The Boat,” the collection finds its roots in the Caribbean, symbolizing a fusion of diverse cultures. Through vibrant colors, rich textures, striking prints, and creative designs, Cooper celebrates the blend of influences.

In a clever twist, Cooper redefines the term “Fresh Off The Boat,” which can sometimes carry negative connotations for immigrants. Instead, Sagaboi’s SS24 collection presents arrivals as individuals who are freshly styled, exuding confidence and pride as they step into new spaces. This collection seeks to replace fear with optimism, offering value and embracing the potential of cultural exchange.
Sagaboi stays true to its identity by incorporating the energetic spirit of steel pan music and culture into its branding. The runway showcased a steel pan vest in various colors, including a dazzling sequined version, as well as the brand’s standout steel pan bomber transformed into sleeveless gilets with distressed quilting and rugged island-inspired stitching. Cooper also adds a playful touch by featuring well-known West Indian colloquial terms and vernacular on slogan t-shirts, and reissuing the popular “Big Big Tings” tee in softer shades.
The collection highlights the craftsmanship of female knitters in Caribbean fishing villages, with an abundance of handmade crochet pieces. Summer uniforms are reimagined with coordinating sets crafted from denim, linen, raw silk, Sea Island cotton, and suede. The color palette reflects a tropical vibe, with vibrant blues, reds, and yellows intertwined with soft pastels such as ecru, lilac, yellow, peach, mint, and sand. These pieces become both essential wardrobe staples and striking fashion statements.
