Discover “The Queer Arab Glossary,” the first-ever collection of Arabic LGBTQ+ slang.
by Adriano Batista
For many, language sets the boundaries of what can be expressed. But when those boundaries fail us, we forge our own paths. Discover “The Queer Arab Glossary,” the first-ever collection of Arabic LGBTQ+ slang.

Marwan Kaabour
Created by artist Marwan Kaabour, this book cracks open the world of Arabic LGBTQ+ slang. Fueled by a lifelong fascination with language and a passion for queer narratives, Kaabour started collecting these secret words from his online platform Takweer. What began as a casual thing turned into a 4-year obsession, amassing over 300 slang terms!
The book dismantles the myth of a monolithic queer Arab identity. This book shows how diverse and creative they are – its humor, defiance, and the power of self-invention.
The book isn’t just about words, it’s about the bigger picture. Cool Arab writers and thinkers chip in with essays, explaining how this slang fits into the whole social and political scene. Visually, the book is a treat. Illustrations inspired by Arab illustration masters like Mohieddin El-Labbad and Helmi El-Touni bring the slang to life.
“The Queer Arab Glossary” throws stereotypes out the window and shouts to the world: “We’ve always been here!” It’s an invitation to explore a hidden world, a place where people connect and celebrate who they are, all with a secret language that’s anything but boring.
