Benji Blue Bills has come a long way since his early boom bap days, now carving a distinct niche in electronic trap with vintage synths and a fresh, immersive sound. In this QA, he opens up about the influences that pushed his sonic shift, the stories behind his tattoos, and the dynamics of working with producers like MAYDAY and BNYX. He also shares his dream collaborations, the reality of rising from SoundCloud beginnings to over a million monthly listeners, and the mindset behind his signature clean-street style. No filters, no fluff – just raw insight from one of trap’s rising innovators.
Your early tracks had a boom bap flavor, but now you’re deep into electronic trap with vintage synths. What triggered that sonic shift?
I started listening to rappers like Chief Keef & Lil Uzi Vert and I liked those synths and drum patterns and I felt like that’s where rap music was heading @ the time & I just evolved the sound some more in my own way
What’s your favourite tattoo and what’s the story behind it?
My favorite tattoo is the little ghost on my neck it’s called a “boo” and since a kid i always felt like that was my alter ego.
“Aye Rage” blew up after YourRAGE hyped it on stream. How did that collab with BNYX and YourRAGE come together?
That was just the beat they gave me to rap on for the song wars I didn’t have a personal relationship with bnyx @ the time I think he just sent max the beat.
You’ve worked with MAYDAY and now BNYX. What’s the biggest difference between their production styles, and how do you adapt?
MAYDAY and I create our own world when we work together like our own little bubble that’s our world. When I work with BNYX it’s more like I’m stepping into his world while bringing little aspects from my original bubble
What would be your dream collab production and feat wise?
I’d like to make songs with NBA Youngboy, Future, Young Thug & Lil Uzi… even though I may never get to, I would love to i would love to work with them those guys are true living legends… on the production side, Even with all the controversy surrounding his name I would like some Kanye West production & Chief Keef too.
You’ve evolved from SoundCloud uploads in 2019 to over a million monthly listeners. What’s been the most unexpected part of that journey?
Everything is unexpected. I never knew if I would really make it foreal but I tricked myself into believing I would. So I didn’t expect any of this and I’m still adjusting.
Your fashion leans more mature – Moncler fits, subtle gold pieces – pretty unique vibe overall. Why that direction?
I just like to dress clean looking while still keeping it street, so my style is like a healthy balance between the 2.
